1 DNA Ethnicity - Desiree Colson

Yay - I got my results.
I'm so excited.

I bet I'm a whole lot Scottish, and just a little English and Irish, because I've studied my ancestry and that's where all my ancestors come from.
I already know this - right?

Wrong!
No matter how much you think you know your heritage, the DNA results always has some surprises in store.

MY ANCESTRY ETHNICITY RESULTS

49%   Ireland/Scotland/Wales (mostly Scotland)
27%   Great Britain (Northern England & the Midlands)
7%   Scandinavia

4%   Iberian Peninsula
3%   Finland/Northwest Russia
5%   Europe West
2%   European Jewish
<1%   Europe East
<1%   Africa North
<1%   Asia South

Okay, pretty good. I'm happy with that.

Since I also have an account with MyHeritage, how about I take my "Raw DNA Data" and put it on MyHeritage too.  That way I will be connecting with even more people.

Uh-oh!

MY MYHERITAGE ETHNICITY RESULTS

14.6%   Ireland/Scotland/Wales
40.7%   England
26.1%   Scandinavia

2.2%   Iberian
0.9%   Finland
15.5%   Italian

UMMMMMM... LET'S COMPARE THAT!

What we are forgetting is that our DNA ethnicity are ESTIMATES.
We are using the same data, across two completely different companies.
Both of these companies have their own data that they draw your results from.

Ancestry boasts that they have 5 times more regions that MyHeritage, Nat Geo Geno 2.0, and
Family Tree DNA; and also say they have 2 more regions than 23andMe.

Despite this, it is still strange to see such huge percentage differences.

The main thing to keep in mind, it at least if nothing else, this gives you an indication of your heritage.
We just have to remember that the ethnicity data are estimates. A guideline.

The best thing still remains about your DNA.
It is a tool to find those missing relatives to expand on your own unique heritage.

I hope this gives some clarification, keep on hunting.
